Kata-kata  kerja  yang dapat digunakan  untuk  menyatakan  preferensi ( kesukaan )

adalah :

                                    1. like............better than................

                                    2. prefer................to...................

Yang harus ditempatkan setelah like atau prefer adalah kata benda atau kata kerja yang berakhiran -ing (Gerund)

Contoh :

                        I like tea better than coffee                                

                        She likes apples better than oranges

                        I prefer tea to coffee                                       

                        She prefers apples to oranges

                        She likes going to the cinema better than watching T.V.      

                        She prefers going to the cinema to watching T.V.

                        They  like  living  in a city better than living in a country

                        They prefer living in a city to living in a country          

                                    3. would prefer............rather than............

"Would  prefer  tidak dapat diikuti kata benda, tetapi  harus  diikuti kata kerja yang berawalan to (to-infinitive). Setelah rather than kata kerjanya harus tanpa to

Contoh :

                        She would prefer to go to the cinema rather than watch T.V.

                        They  would prefer to live in a city rather than live in  a country

Would prefer dapat diikuti Object + to-infinitive.

Contoh :

                        I would prefer her to go to the cinema rather than watch T.V.

                        I  would prefer them to live in a city rather than live in a country

Di dalam kalimat Interrogative Would dipindahkan ke depan kalimat.

Contoh :

                        Would  she prefer to go to the cinema rather than watch T.V.?

                        Would  they  prefer to live in a city rather than live  in a country?

Di dalam kalimat Negative, Would prefer + not + to-infinitive.

Contoh :

                        She would prefer not to go to the cinema rather than go alone

                        He would prefer not to wait outside rather than get wet

                        They  would prefer not to live in a city rather than have nojob

 

Apabila diikuti Object + to-infinitive, maka notnya ditempatkan  sebelum to.

Contoh :

                        I would prefer her not to go to the cinema rather than go alone 

                        I would rather him not to wait outside rather than get wet      

                        I would prefer them not to live in a city rather than have no job

                                    4. would rather............than...............

Would rather tidak boleh diikuti kata benda, tetapi harus diikuti kata kerja infinitive tanpa  to. Would  rather  dapat  disingkat  menjadi 'd rather.

Contoh :

                        She would rather go to the cinema than watch T.V.

                        They  would rather live in a city than live in a country

Di dalam kalimat Interrogative, would dipindahkan ke depan kalimat.

Contoh :

                        Would she rather go to the cinema than watch T.V.?

                        Would they rather live in a city than live in a country?

Di dalam kalimat Negative, would rather + not.

Contoh :

                        She would rather not go to the cinema than go alone

                        He would rather not wait outside than get wet

                        They would rather not live in a city than have no job

"Would prefer" dapat diganti dengan "would rather" tanpa mengubah arti sedikitpun.

Contoh :

                        She would prefer to go to the cinema rather than watch T.V.

atau

                        She would rather go to the cinema than watch T.V.

Tetapi  apabila "would prefer" nya diikuti object, maka  bila  diganti dengan would rather, polanya adalah sbb:

                                    S  +  would rather  +  S  +  V 2  +  O

Contoh :

                        I would prefer her to go to the cinema rather than watch T.V.

                     = I would rather she went to the cinema than watched  T.V.

                        Would you prefer her to go to the cinema rather than watch T.V?

                     = Would you rather she went to the cinema than watched T.V.?

                        I would prefer her not to go to the cinema rather than go alone

                     = I would rather she did not go to the cinema  than  went alone.

Apabila  kejadiannya  waktu lampau (Past), maka kata  kerjanya  adalah 

( Had + V 3 )

Polanya adalah sbb:

                                    S  +  would rather  +  S  +  had + V 3  +  O

Contoh :

                                    I would prefer her to go to the cinema yesterday.

                                 = I would rather she had gone to the cinema yesterday.
