Bentuk kata kerja
Simple Past Tense digunakan untuk
menerangkan kejadian atau kegiatan yang :
a. terjadi pada waktu lampau. Kejadian tersebut tidak ada hubungannya
dengan waktu sekarang. Maksudnya,
kejadian tersebut tidak terjadi lagi
sekarang.
Contoh :
John
was sick yesterday
Kalimat diatas menerangkan
bahwa John sakit kemarin. Artinya
sekarang dia sudah sembuh lagi. Dalam Simple Past Tense keterangan waktunya
harus selalu disebutkan. Kecuali
kalau sudah jelas dari kontek kalimatnya.
Contoh :
Paul :
This time last year I was in Jakarta
John :
I was there too
Napoleon marched his army to Moscow

Simple Past Tense
adalah :
1. yang
menggunakan "last" yang berarti : yang lalu
Contoh :
last week (=minggu yang lalu), last month, last year, last Saturday
dst.
2. yang
menggunakan "ago" yang berarti : yang lalu
Contoh :
a
week ago (=seminggu yang lalu), a month ago,
two
days ago, two years ago, a few days ago.
3. yang
menggunakan "this" yang berarti : tadi
Contoh :
this morning (=tadi pagi)
this afternoon (=tadi siang)
4. yang
menggunakan kata depan seperti : at, in, on, for, before, after,
during.
Contoh :
at
7 o'clock, in July, on July 1, 1990,
in
1989, before the war, after breakfast,
till 8 o'clock, till midnight, for an hour,
during the night, during the summer dsb
Keterangan waktu lain yang
biasa digunakan adalah yang terdiri dari
sebuah anak kalimat yang dimulai
dengan kata-kata sambung seperti :
when
= ketika after = sesudah
while =
sementara itu as soon as = segera setelah
as
= ketika till/until
= sampai
before = sebelum
Kata-kata sambung tersebut harus diikuti : S + V2

Contoh :

Anak
kalimat dapat ditempatkan di
awal kalimat, kecuali yang menggu-
nakan kata sambung till / until.
Contoh :
When the bell rang, the students went out of
the class-room.
Before he went
to bed, he shut the windows
They had to
wait until he came back
b. terjadi dan selesai
seketika itu juga. Jadi proses kejadian nya berlangsung
cepat sekali.
Contoh
:
He turned out
the light at midnight
She shut the
book when I entered the room
He came up to
me as soon as he saw me
She collapsed
as soon as she saw the man
They stopped
talking as I opened the door
c. terjadi secara berturut-turut pada waktu
lampau.
Contoh :
She droved into the car-park, got out
of the car, closed
the door and all the windows, locked
the door and walked towards the
theatre
When he saw me, he stood up and came up
to me
The students went out of the classroom
when the bell rang
When he called her a liar, she smacked
his face
d. terjadi secara
berulang-ulang pada waktu lampau, tapi sekarang tidak terjadi lagi. Ini merupakan kejadian kebiasaan pada waktu lampau.
Contoh :
My father
always smoked cigars when he was young
While I was
abroad, she wrote to me twice a month
During the
summer, he went swimming almost every day
When we lived in Jakarta, we went to the cinema twice week
Kata kerja used to+infinitive ( kata kerja dasar) juga dapat dipakai untuk menerangkan kebiasaan yang dilakukan pada waktu lampau.
Contoh :
I used to play tennis every Saturday. ( Dulu
saya biasa bermain tenis
setiap hari Sabtu )
He used to
work in a bank years ago
We used to
spend our vocations in the mountains
Beni used to be thin when he was a child
They used to
have a lot of money, but they don't anymore
My
father used to smoke cigars when he was young
